Five Easy Home Decorating Tips

November 12, 2013

Looking for a way to decorate or revamp your home? Here are some quick (and easy!) tips for decorating – whether it’s in a new space or you’re looking for ways to update spaces that already exist.

1. Top it off with an area rug

Layering any texture (like rugs) adds dimension to a space. It can create a warm and inviting environment. You can add rugs to hardwood floors, tile, or even layer rugs on top of carpeted floors.

2. On your mantle…

Try not to put small, delicate items on your mantle. Instead, put larger, bold objects that can be seen from a distance. Start off with a mirror or piece of artwork, and supplement it with objects like tall vases or candles.

3. Put similar colors together

Pick a color you love and stick with its variations. Colors from the same family can be integrated together effortlessly. If you like blue, for example, paint your walls a shade of blue and accessorize with furniture, area rugs, and other objects with varying shades of blue.

4. Be careful not to overcrowd rooms (especially with furniture)

Choose furniture that doesn’t overwhelm your space. If you have large, chunky furniture it may make your room look smaller (depending on its size). Quick tip: Don’t be afraid to move furniture into the center of the room rather than against the walls; it actually makes the room appear more spacious!

5. Choose the appropriate window treatments for your space

For a window in a large room, choose large-patterned window treatments. A small pattern may disappear in a large space.
