Your (Exterior) Spring Cleaning To-Do List

March 7, 2014

With spring just around the corner, here’s part two of our spring cleaning to-do list. We have some recommendations about how to prepare the exterior of your home to ensure that it’s spring and summer ready.

1. Clean your exterior windows. Winter storms can leave a nasty residue all over that glass, much like the slushy, sludgy roads can make your tires look gross. It’s better to clean your outside windows before inside windows. And if you have screens, rinse them off before putting them in.

2. Be sure to clean your gutters. It’s a good idea to clean them to prevent water damage. Use a ladder and scoop the leaves, twigs, and materials out.

3. Declutter your garage. We like the strategy of designating different areas to different types of items (like all balls and sports equipment in one area). Boxes are a huge help as well.

4. Get rid of leaves and clutter in your lawn. Especially this winter, your yard has been covered in snow, ice and leaves. Get ready for a lush lawn and a flourishing garden by getting rid of the soggy, old leaves choking your flowerbeds and grass.

5. Use a pressure washer to clean the outside of your home. Just keep in mind that some types of siding (and peeling paint) may not be able to take the pressure, so be sure to choose the right type. If you don’t have a pressure washer or know someone who does, you can go to your local hardware store to rent one.

6. Pull the weeds from your garden. Preliminary weeding will make your gardens look even better in the spring. And if you’re feeling up to it, you can prune your hedges and shrubs too.

7. Clean your patio or deck. It’s not really spring until you invite friends and family over for a barbecue, so be sure to sweep any dirt and leaves away, pull out patio furniture, and clean furniture cushions. Finally, use a wire brush and degreaser to prep your grill for grilling.
